i just finished reading Swamplandia! by Karen Russell. this book is the story of ava and kiwi bigtree, heirs to an alligator wrestling theme park, who are desperately fighting for the survival of the theme park after their mother dies. it’s a coming-of-age and adventure story all in one. 

i really loved ava bigtree. her narration was so vivid and unique. the whole story reminded me of geek love by katherine dunn (if you haven’t read it, get yourself to a bookstore/library/kindle immediately) because of its slightly fantastical story and the theme of outsiders desperately fighting pulls to assimilate into “normal” society.

i give this 4 out of 5 stars, and i highly recommend giving it a read.
