i just finished reading The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht. i thought this book was enjoyable, but i didn’t like it nearly as much as all the reviews suggested i would. it tells the story of a young doctor in a nameless eastern european country who is trying to solve the mystery of her grandfather’s death. the story is also filled with folk tales which ultimately help the narrator figure out her grandfather’s death and to understand more about his life.
i think what bothered me the most about this book was how disjointed each chapter felt. i didn’t really feel like any of the separate stories came together in the end, and i was left feeling unsatisfied. that being said, obreht is a beautiful writer, and the story was certainly original and interesting.
i would give it 3 out of 5 stars.
