Just finished In the Garden Of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin. I now need to read something less bone-chillingly terrifying and demoralizing.
It was an interesting read, and I learned a lot about the day-to-day atmosphere during the rise of the Third Reich, but not as engaging, per se, as Devil in the White City, Larson’s other non-fiction-but-reads-like-a-novel book. That may just be because the subject matter here is more familiar and really about mundane people doing HORRIBLE things (which, at least on a mass scale, comes off worse than ONE person doing a BUNCH of horrible things, like in Devil…).
I recommend it if you’re into WWII history, want to learn anything about how diplomats and ambassadors function(ed), or are curious about life during pre-WWII Berlin.
