What I’ve Read: Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone Mystery Series
I should clarify that I haven’t exactly read the entire series…yet. I’m nearly done with “‘M’ is for Malice” and I fully intend to keep reading until I’ve completed “‘U’ is for Undertow,” which is the most recently published of the series.
If you’re familiar with any mystery series, there are formulaic elements you’ll recognize. I used to avoid mystery series for that reason alone—I hated the chapter-long formulaic openings introducing the main character the exact same way in every book. (Patience is not my strong suit.) Luckily, Sue Grafton is a far more mature writer and knows how prepare a great stand-alone mystery book that’s also a cohesive piece of a full series.
These are great summer reads, and if you’re looking for something new to add to your beach/poolside reading list, you’d be hard-pressed to do better than these. The books move quickly (I’ve been averaging one per day for the past several weeks) and a pure pleasure to read. They’re entertaining and fun and the cases are usually tangible situations for the main character to find herself in. I hope you enjoy them as much as I am!
Have you read any of the Sue Grafton alphabet mysteries? If so, what’s your favorite?
